Cusco , is located in the southern part of the Andes. It is the most visited tourist site of Peru and one of the most important cities of South - America. Named by the Incas "Casa y morada de los dioses" ( house and home of the gods), the city became the capital of one of the biggest pre-colonial empires: "Tawantinsuyo". The fact that Cusco was the center of a vast road network which almost occupied whole South America, might have been the reason why the Incas called it "Qosqo", the navel of the world.
Machu Picchu is the most famous attraction near Cusco. It was discovered 1911 by the north American scientist Hiram Bingham and has been elected this year as The Fourth World Wonder.
